"Housing affordability is a vexing challenge and transit-oriented development is often a victim of its own success. These neighborhoods become sought after by buyers and renters of all ages, pushing up housing costs. The challenge now is to ensure that housing that is affordable to low- and moderate-income households, including older adults, is part of these new neighborhoods."

After September 11, 2001, Lower Manhattan was a shell of its former self. New York City, deeply rattled by the attacks and mourning the thousands that died, was too. Just a few weeks later Michael Bloomberg was elected, and as his deputy mayor of economic development and rebuilding he appointed the investment banker Dan Doctoroff. His task? Repairing a city some thought would never again be a center of business or a desirable place to live.

Sixteen years later, New York is a changed city. Under Doctoroff’s leadership, the landscape of New York from Lower Manhattan to downtown Brooklyn has radically changed.

Unless you fell off the Kindle truck yesterday, you understand Amazon probably knows already where it wants to build, meaning the winning jurisdiction will squander resources on a headquarters it would have gotten anyway, argues a Brookings Institution analyst...

The city has turned the data from its massive Climate Ready Boston report into an interactive map that allows you to explore many of the report's findings and projections.

The tool allows you to layer various data sets onto the map, including sea level rise and flood risk, as well as vulnerable populations and areas of high temperatures. You can zoom in to or search specific places within city limits to see effects there.

Climate change brings the threat of sea-level rise, damaging floods, warming temperatures, and changing storm patterns, which are increasingly posing a threat to East Boston. Our diverse and vibrant peninsular community is poised to experience these threats in a big way. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Sandy are teaching us that large urban centers can suffer loss of life and severe property damage. Personal and institutional preparedness are necessary in the face of these increasing challenges.

The City of Boston and other City/State agencies are making plans to protect East Boston, our people, our businesses, and our community. NOAH is working closely with the City and various agencies so that plans make sense for East Boston. As part of our efforts, we will be organizing and hosting the first-ever East Boston Climate Summit on October 28, 2017.

Come and learn what planning is in the works, what still needs to be done, and what you can do to participate in shaping future plans. Residents, agencies, and businesses can advise the City and agencies by participating in this unique event. Mayor Marty Walsh, a national climate change leader, is our invited speaker along with Oscar A. Chacón, co-founder and executive director of Alianza Americas. Alianza Americas is an immigrant serving organization. Our elected local representatives will also be speaking. There will be a variety of interesting workshops to attend.

East Boston's first-ever Climate Summit is an opportunity for us to get facts and then to work together-agencies, departments, neighborhood groups, small businesses, residents-so that we can preserve East Boston for ourselves, our children, and generations to come.

    It's FREE! All are invited.

Contact Gabriela Boscio (gboscio@noahcdc.org) or Melinda Vega (mvega@noahcdc.org) for more information or to participate.
